Elastic and inelastic scattering of /sup 40/Ar from /sup 208/Pb at 236 MeV

The scattering of /sup 40/Ar from /sup 208/Pb at 236 MeV has been measured with sufficient energy resolution to separate elastic from inelastic scattering. The results demonstrate the importance of long-range absorption due to strong Coulomb interaction and are well reproduced by appropriate theoretical calculations.
