PURPOSE: To provide the subject apparatus equipped with an open capillary tube reaction chamber and a heating means and others, with minimized temperature unevenness and excellent operability and reactivity. CONSTITUTION: This apparatus comprises an open capillary tube reaction chamber 22 involving modification, annealing and extension processes and having a portion adaptable to include a reaction mixture containing the target nucleic acid segment, two fluid baths 18, 16 each with a thermostat divided by an insulation layer 20 and intended to perform thermal cycles necessary for the amplification reaction, a four-way valve 14 and a peristaltic pump 12 each intended to automatically move the reaction mixture into/out of the capillary tube reaction chamber 22, and a positioning means intended to automatically position the fluid baths 18, 16 being in contact with the part of the capillary tube reaction chamber 22.
