Personalised and adaptable learning: designing the architecture

2010
Personalisation of learning is discussed by many authors (Eklaund & Brusilovsky [1], and Kurzel, Slay & Hagenus [2] for example) as a key challenge for techologists. Previous research undertaken by the authors [3] found that common e-learning platorms (for example MOODLE [4]) offer good course and learner management tools but they do not offer a truly "personalised" learning experience for the learner. This paper will discuss the need for an e-learning platform which will allow for a truly personalised experience for the learner. This paper will then report on the progress of a research project underway at the University of Greenwich which is designing and developing a personalised e-learning system, offering personalised and adaptable learning in a number of ways. The e-learning platform being developed intends to offer personalistion to the learner based on their specific learning requirements.
