The first telescopeoftheHEGRA airCherenkov imagingtelescopearray

1994
eAbstractIn search ofVHEyray emission fromcosmic point sourcesasystem of imagingCherenkovtelescopes is constructed atpresent onthe Canarian island of La Palma; the first telescope hasbeenoperational since 1992. The Cherenkovlight fromair showerparticles is collectedbya5 m2 reflector. Thecameraat thefocuscontains 37 photomultipliers which sample theimages oftheCherenkovflashes. Thesubsequent imageanalysis allows thediscrimination of yray inducedevents from themuchmoreabundant chargedcosmic rayinducedshowers. Thetelescope hasan effective energy threshold for .y showersofabout 1.5 TeV. During thefirst year of operationasignal fromthe Crab nebula was detected. The HEGRAcollaboration' is currently building alarge detector complexfor thestudyof cosmic radiationatthe site of the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachoson the Canarian island of LaPalma(28.75° N, 17.89° W,2200masl). The primary aim of the HEGRAcomplexisthe search for high energy y ray sources using differentdetection techniques [1]. Thelarge energy rangeof primaryyrays, 1012 eV
