A longstanding concern in research ethics is whether prospective research participants are given adequate information about the potential risks of research participation during the informed con sent process.' This review of some of the literature about how to convey risk information in the clinical and research contexts shows that communicating the chances of adverse consequences to potential research subjects is a complex undertaking.2
