Learning Vocabulary Strategically in a Study-Abroad Context

This chapter is a practical chapter with takeaways for language learners as well as for practicing teachers. It offers suggestions for learning vocabulary and improving the quality of strategy use. Drawn from the case studies and one additional study, it suggests specifically on approaches and strategies which international Chinese students have found particularly beneficial for learning vocabulary. Different types of resources, such as books, social networks, Internet forums, videos and games, that second language learners can use to maximise their vocabulary learning during study abroad are provided. The chapter highlights the importance of negotiation and collaborative dialogue in strategy instruction. Furthermore, it proposes an interactive web-based technique which could be used to strengthen learners’ existing strategy use and develop their awareness of other possible strategies.
