Black Turbinate sign: MRI finding in acute invasive fungal sinusitis

2020
Abstract Mucormycosis results in non-enhancement of infected tissues on contrast enhanced MRI due to angioinvasion and subsequent ischemia. Non-enhancement of the nasal turbinate is termed the ‘Black Turbinate’ (BT) sign. We report the case of a 75-year old man who presented with facial pain and the BT sign on MRI. This case highlights the importance of obtaining MRI in patients with suspected mucormycosis and reiterates the significance of the BT sign to clinicians in prompt recognition and treatment of mucormycosis.
