A new, scalable, and extremely simple approach to synthesize the title triazolopiperazine (VII), a key intermediate in the preparation of the potent dipeptidyl peptidase-IV inhibitor sitagliptin, as well as related 3-trifluoromethyltriazolopyridines is developed.
