A simulation environment for the investigation into loss of mains detection methods for grid connected single phase inverters

2012
Domestic scale DG (Distributed Generation) installations include a multitude of technologies, many of which are based on a RES (Renewable Energy Source). The energy generation of a DG installation doesn't necessarily coincide with local power consumption; grid connection allows surplus local power to be distributed using the wider power network. A power electronics interface is necessary to achieve connection between the DG unit and the distribution network. The majority of grid connection standards stipulate that the power electronics interface must include a robust LOM (Loss Of Mains) detection routine. This paper presents a Matlab/Simulink simulation model that has been designed to mimic a standard laboratory setup that is used verify the adherence to the LOM grid connection standards. Multiple in-the-loop based LOM detection methods are presented, analysed and compared. Experimental verification of the simulation results is presented to demonstrate the closeness of the model.
