Volume reduction by segregation and treatment of low-level radioactive waste at the Colonie Interim Storage Site
1994
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is conducting a phased cleanup of the Colonic Interim Storage Site (CISS) under its Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP). The FUSRAP was initiated in 1974 to identify, clean up, or otherwise control sites where low-level radioactive contamination remains from the early years of the nation`s atomic-energy program or from commercial operations causing conditions that Congress has mandated DOE to remedy. The site consists of an II 150-m{sup 2} (120 000-ft{sup 2}) brick and concrete building on a 4.5-ha (11.2-acre) site. Chemical and radiological contamination exists at the site from past processes. The removal and disposal of mixed radioactive and chemical waste stored in the building, asbestos-containing materials, process equipment, and nonstructural building appurtenances began in 1992. This report describes the radioactive waste management program to reduce the volume and segregate the wastes.
