Novel Applications Through Miniaturization and Scalability of Spectral Sensing and Imaging

2018
VTT's Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) tunable optical filter technology makes it possible to create small and cost-efficient microspectrometers and hyperspectral imagers for wavelengths from UV to thermal infrared. The technology is capable of addressing two parallel application drivers: 1) high performance, generated by large optical apertures and excellent customization capability for enabling novel demanding sensing applications, and 2) high-volume manufacturing scalability of MEMS FPI processing to generating potential to reach a disruptive price point enabling completely new spectral sensor markets. Through continuous engagement with industry, these small sensors are finding their way into new applications and sensor products, including for example small satellite instruments, medical diagnostics, hand-held and mobile sensing devices and industrial process measurements.
