Security about florfenicol used in aquaculture

Florfenicol,with novel-broad-spectrum, has been used in aquaculture since early 1990's. In 1990, this medicine was firstly put on market in Japan for curing the diseases of pasteurellosis and streptococcosis in Swriola lalandei, Pagrosomus major, Oncorhynchus kisutch, Trachurus japonicus, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Plecoglossus altivelis, tilapia and eel. Afterwards, this medicine was authorized to market for specific fish diseases in Korea, Norway, Chile, Canada and Britain. In China, florfenicol was authorized as the new veterinary drug and can be used in aquaculture for treatment of Adward's disease and red fin disease in eel. In this paper, the advance of research on security of florfenicol used in aquaculture was outlined emphatically. In addition, the market status, pharmacodynamics, and determination of residues of florfenciol were reviewed. The purpose of this study is to provide a scientific advice for the use of this medicine in aquaculture, especially in China.
