Dynamic reactive power management based on forecasts and chronological power flow

EDP Distribuicao (EDPD) is developing methodologies to establish a dynamic ‘next-day’ reactive power management plan based on load and generation forecasts for 100k connection points of the high voltage/medium voltage Portuguese network. This is achieved by using a Big Data platform to compute the 100k forecast profiles whose results are then accessed by an optimal power-flow software. This study presents the methodologies developed by EDPD with its partners to establish a ‘next-day’ reactive power program based on the optimisation of reactive power flows in the Portuguese network as constrained by the reactive power requirements at each of the distribution system operators–transmission system operators interconnection points.
