SCG stability enhancement using STATCOM based-ANN controller

2011
Artificial neural network (ANN) control of static compensator (STATCOM) to improve the damping of power systems is presented. The proposed control strategy is applied on a STATCOM attached to a single machine-infinite bus (SMIB) and a multi-machine power systems that include a superconducting generator (SCG). The proposed control method, ANN-STATCOM is designed based on proportional integral derivative (PID) by means of minimization of the system's deviations. The damping provided by the ANNSTATCOM controller is compared with a fixed-parameter PID-STATCOM controller. In view of power systems control, various conventional types of control systems are employed such as PID controller for SCG and power system stabilizers (PSSs) for conventional units. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ANN-STATCOM controller in stabilizing the power systems performance for various disturbances at multiple operating points.
