In the United States, federal legislation and implementation of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA/”Superfund”) of 1980 and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) of 1976 led to the discovery of large and wide-spread subsurface contamination. One significant source was from leaking underground storage tanks at gasoline stations and fuel tank farms (depots).
