Synthesis of Higher-Carbon Sugars by Addition of Organometallic Reagents to Aldehydes or Lactols Derived from Carbohydrates.

Abstract The addition of different Grignard or lithium organometallic reagents to lactols (1, 6, 21) or aldehydes (10), derived from d -glucose or d -mannose, to give the new higher-carbon sugars (2, 3, 7–9, 13–19, 22 and 23) is reported.
