Air Showers of Size Greater than 105 Particles: (I) Core Location and Shower Size Determination

1958
An array of radiation detection apparatus was placed on the roof of the University of Sydney School of Physics to provide information on the high-energy nucleonnucleus interactions of the primary and secondary particles in cosmic showers, interactions which give rise to the development of air showers detectuble in the lower atmosphere, and showers of size 10/sup 5/ particles to 10/ sup 7/ particles. A recording and analysis system based on the maximum likelihood method is described. (C.H.)
