Active control of flow induced vibration by self-excited hinged plates

2000
This study investigates the feasibility of utilising hinged plates with actively controlled lengths to suppress flow induced vibrations in mechanical structures. A computer program is developed to evaluate the lengths of the plates for optimum suppression at any flow speed. An active control scheme is devised for implementing the length change. The results from a model test show that the measured suppressed amplitudes are in good agreement with the predicted values. The cases of a deep water riser and galloping transmission line are considered for illustration.
