Glnsl, M., Suan, 2., Crerr.reon, F., & K0oele, O., Some properties ofa beet mosaic virus isolate from western Slovakia. Biologia, Bratislava, 55:85-89. 2000: ISSN 0006-3088.Beet mosaic virus (BtMV) isolate REN-1, originating from field infected sugarbeet in western Slovakia was characterized. Virus caused systemic infectionon 7 of 8 plant species tested by mechanical inoculation. Pisum satiuumcv.Junil,k and Ni,cotiana cleueland,ii x glutinosa were found to be suitable hostsfor purification. Purified virus preparations contained filamentous flexuousparticles typical for the Potyuirus genus when observed under electron micro-scope. In SDS-PAGE the viral capsid proteins (CP) migrated as one majorband with a molecular weight of about 30 kDa. BIMV CPs were detected inwestern blot analysis both from purified virus preparations as well as crudeplant sap. BIMV REN-1 was recognized in western blots also by three heterol-ogous anti-potyvirus antisera as well as by two monoclonal antibodies againstpea seed-borne mosaic virus.Key words: beet mosaic potyvirus, symptomatology, ELISA, western blot, electron microscopy, serological relationship.
