"TMT diversity in bureaucracies: Consequences for Dutch accounting firms, 1940-1982"
2014
Demographic diversity in top management teams (TMTs) has the potential to destabilize organizations through higher TMT attrition and increased risk of organizational dissolution. This paper illustrates the role of rational bureaucratic organizations in reducing these disruptive effects of TMT demographic diversity. We test our arguments by using the information collected on Dutch accounting firms during the period 1940-1982. The results of our analyses indeed confirm that rational bureaucracies are less vulnerable to the disruptive consequences of TMT demographic diversity.
