Reciprocity of social support is associated with psychological distress and suicidal ideation in older Japanese people: A population-based study

•Reciprocal social support was associated with lower distress and suicidal ideation.•Both received and provided low social support showed the highest risk.•Women had a higher risk of distress and suicidal ideation compare with men.•This gender difference was more prominent in over-providing situations.
