Mechanical Properties of Composites From Discarded Carpets

2019
Abstract A large quantity of discarded waste carpets is generated annually worldwide, and their disposal to landfill raises environmental and economic concerns. More precisely, discarded carpets predominantly have synthetic fibers, which are nonbiodegradable, which thereby decreases the availability of landfill for other uses. Initially, this article gives an introduction and composition of discarded carpets alongside an overview of their processing options. This article also focuses on various processing conditions and mechanical properties of discarded carpet based composites, thereby highlighting their potential for structural applications. This development could also produce significant economic benefits and positive impact on the environment.
