The invention relates to a process for preparing a granulate with a low acetaldehyde content and improved processing properties of a highly viscous polyester melt, wherein the polyester melt strand is cut under water at high temperature as possible, the accompanying water is separated with the least possible cooling of the granules from the granule, the thus obtained low-water granulate is passed after the water separation directly into a dealdehydisation container and the granules in dealdehydisation container by means of a scavenging air flow will be treated and a device for performing this method.
