31-cm high-resolution TFT-LCD for notebook-type PC

1996
The liquid-crystal display (LCD) is one of the most important devices in a notebook-type personal computer (PC). Recently, the performance of notebook-type PCs has almost equalled that of desktop PCs. As a result, the market requires biggersize, higher resolution, improved color capabilities, lower power consumption, and compactness for the LCD in step with the rapid improvement in performance of notebook-type PCs. Hitachi has developed a very compact 31-cm (12.1-inch) extended graphics array (XGA) LCD addressed by thin-film transistors (TFT-LCD) that can be mounted in an A4-size notebook PC. Hitachi has developed new technology to achieve these market requirements. Our single-side driving scheme and newly developed super slim driver reduce the frame space of the display. Our low-voltage driving scheme displays 262k colors using only 3.3 V. Hitachi introduced the first small frame structure TFT-LCD into the display market, which is 31-cm diagonal size XGA high resolution with 262k-color capability.
