Surgical treatment of the elderly patients with rectal cancer

2006
Objective To study the surgical treatment of patients than aged over 75 years with rectal cancer. Methods Retrospective analysis of the clinical data of surgical treatment in 128 rectal cancer patients over 75 years of age. Results In this series,59.4% of patients had the preoperative case history longer than six months;the preoperative misdiagnosis rate was high(47.7%);95.3% of the patients had accompanying other diseases.Tumor radical resection rate was 86%;the anus-preserving operation rate was 61%,and the bowel control satisfaction rate was 85.4%.Cnclusions The elderly patients aged over 75 years with rectal cancer often have other accompanying diseases, but proper perioperative management may enhance the operative efficacy. The elderly should not be denied a restorative surgical treatment unless there is overwhelming evidence that incontinence will be inevitable.
