Enough is now known about the structure of DNA to enable a fairly satisfactory account to be given of many of the observed effects of ionizing radiations. It will, therefore, be desirable to start with an outline of present knowledge of DNA and of nucleoproteins. The Watson-Crick two-stranded structure (64) has been capable in its essentials of accommodating the observed facts.
