An Electrochemical Study of Uranium in Fused Chlorides

1960
The U(III)‐U(O) and U(IV)‐U(III) standard potentials in eutectic, and the U(IV)‐U(III) and standard potentials in eutectic have been measured at 450°C. The values found are respectively, −2.25, −1.30, −1.25, and −0.285 v vs. the standard Pt(II)‐Pt(O) reference electrode on the mole‐fraction scale. Polarographic studies of the behavior of U(III), U(IV), and in eutectic at 450°C have been performed. The significance of the results with respect to certain industrially important processes is briefly noted. A coulometric titration procedure utilizing electrogenerated Pt(II) has been developed for an in situ determination of U(III) in and eutectics.
