Dry sliding friction and wear properties of AZ91 Mg alloy

2010
Effects of various load(50 N,100 N,150 N,200 N) on the friction and wear behavior of cast magnesium alloy AZ91 have been tested by using a M-2000 abrasive tester under low and high speed dry sliding friction conditions, and the temperature of the friction surface, morphologies of worn surface of AZ91 magnesium alloy and compositions of the wear debris were analyzed and the wear mechanism has been described. The results showed that the wear weight loss of AZ91 alloy would be improved by increasing the load or the sliding distances. When the load is lower, the oxidation wear and abrasive wear are dominant in the wear behavior of the alloy. The wear behavior of the alloy will change with the increase in the load and the speed. When the speed is high and the larger load(150,200 N) were adopted, the temperature of AZ91 alloy surface was improved obviously, the delamination wear wear appeared and became dominant in the wear behavior.
