Implementation of a semi-analytical method for prediction of fan rotor-stator interaction broadband noise

2013
The present paper describes an initial attempt of turbofan engine broadband noise prediction method that involves both analytical noise prediction methods and turbulence characteristics obtained from computational fluid dynamics. Altough there are other sources of broadband noise besides rotor-stator interaction that is the main source and the source that this work will focus on. This study uses a numerical approach to predict the turbulence characteristics and an analytical theory to estimate broadband noise generation and propagation. The numerical simulations were carried out using the commercial software ANSYS CFX® and the adopted turbulence model was the shear stress transport. The noise generation and propagation computer code calculates the unsteady pressure distribution by approximating the stator vane geometry to flat plates where it is possible to have a continuous distribution of pressure dipoles. Finally the acoustic pressure in the duct is calculated by Green's functions.
