The invention relates to a device (1) for opening and closing a rotary container of a washing machine, in particular a drum (D) integral with at least a hub (H) which can rotate or oscillate, having its own horizontal or inclined axis, comprising at least one door (11) capable of opening and closing at least one opening (O) of the drum (D), first actuating means and guide means (21, 22) which control the movement of said door (11) relative to the hub (H), first elastic means (71) capable of transmitting elastic forces to said door (11). The device (1) comprises an articulated mechanism (31, 32) connecting said door (11) to the hub (H) for locking and unlocking said door (11) relative to the drum (D) and opening and closing the opening (S) the drum (D). The invention also relates to a method of opening and closing a rotary container of a washing machine, with the device (1).
