PATH ANALYTIC SURVEY OF ALCOHOL USE ON COMPLIANCE WITH ROAD SAFETY RULES AMONG COMMERCIAL MOTORCYCLISTS INIREPODUN/IFELODUN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EKITI STATE, NIGERIA

The study was path analytic survey of alcohol use on compliance with road safety rules among commercial motorcyclists in Ifelodun/Irepodun Local Government Area, Ekiti State. All registered commercial motorcyclists in the area made up the study population. Descriptive cross-sectional research design of the survey type was used to conduct the study. The sample size comprised of 200 commercial motorcyclists selected through multi stage sampling techniques. A structured validated questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents. Data collected were analysed using Multiple Regression Analysis and Path Analysis at 0.05 level of significance. The seven independent variables tested, jointly accounted for 32.6% of motorcyclists’ compliance while sources of alcohol use was found to be the single best predictor of motorcyclists’ compliance with road safety rules. Seven pathways have direct significant effect while five paths have indirect significant effects on compliance with road safety rules. It was recommended that sensitization and counsellingprogramme on the dangers of alcohol use be organized for commercial motorcyclists.
