The Potential of Non-Carbon Supported Electrocatalyst for Automotive Fuel-Cells

2012
Improving the performance of the cathode of PEFCs, where the ORR takes place, is probably still one of the most urgent requirements in commercializing automotive fuel cells. In fact, Pt or Pt-alloy nanoparticles supported on highsurface area carbon display good performance as cathode catalysts in electronically controlled systems. However, under real-life operating conditions without system mitigation, especially the cathode can reach potentials as high as 1.5V (e.g., during start-stop cycling) where the used carbon supported catalysts are lacking corrosion stability and become fuel cell lifetime determining.
