The separator for an electrochemical cell, preferably a lithium ion battery comprising a porous layer containing the following components: (A) 5 to 99.9 wt .-% of at least one glass plate having an average thickness of 0.05 .mu.m to 30 .mu.m and an average edge length of 0.1 microns to 150 microns, (B) 0.1 to 95 wt .-% of at least one binder; wherein the components (A) and (B) add up to 100 wt .-% and wherein the separator by means of a coating process is applied directly to a battery electrode, and a porosity of 5 to 80% and a total thickness of 0.5 microns to 200 microns having.
