Background A way to prevent fires of spilled combustible / flammable liquids is the spillage assessment and subsequent development of compensatory actions. For this purpose, the area of spillage must be determined. Aims and Objectives The authors set and solved the problem of obtaining relationship for determining spillage area, which would take into account both the properties of spilled material and the properties of spillage underlayer. Methods Field tests were conducted to determine the geometric parameters of spillage, depending on the physical properties of combustible and flammable liquids, and the parameters of spillage underlayer. The analysis of experimental results was performed, and cross-plots of calculated and experimental data on the spillage area were produced for different spillage underlayers. Conclusion As a result of experiments and analysis of the results, a formula was obtained for determining spillage area, depending on the kinetic viscosity of the spilled substance and the absorption coefficient of the surface under the spillage. The advantage of the derived relationship, in comparison with formulas known before, is the possibility of its wider application because it includes the terms that describe the properties of spilled product and underlying surface, thereby expanding the boundaries of its use.
