Selection Criteria and Selection of Remediation Measures and Their Application; Presented on the Example of a Former Factory in the Iron- and Steel-Business in Düsseldorf, FRG

Over the last 100 years an area of about 45 ha within the citylimits of Dusseldorf was the site of a pipe manufacturer. The factory was closed in 1987. The author’s office was asked by the Mannesmannrohren-Werke AG to conduct investigations at the site with respect to environmental contaminations. During this assessment and the investigations for remediation it turned out that in many areas (Fig. 1) the ground was contaminated by the following pollutants: mineral oil (as defined in DIN 38 409 part 18) polar aliphatic hydrocarbons trichlorethene polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) monoaromatic compounds (BTX) heavy metals.
