A new approach for drug targeting to the central nervous system: Lipid nanoparticles

2019
Abstract Central nervous system (CNS) disorders are increasing among populations worldwide. Neurological disorders are difficult to treat due to the blood–brain barrier. This chapter discusses the limitations to CNS drug delivery and the potential use of lipid nanoparticles for drug targeting to the brain. Lipid nanoparticles include advantages of both polymeric nanoparticles and liposomes and also have superiority such as possibility of large-scale production. The methods currently used for lipid nanoparticle production, physicochemical characterization, and formulation development for drug delivery and targeting to the brain are also discussed.
