The Athletic Skills Model

2018
The chapter provides a suitable framework to structure developmental movement programmes fostering physical literacy. The Athletic Skills Model (ASM) strives to educate and develop each individual's capabilities to seek out and engage in lifelong physical activity and sport participation by maintaining a balance between performance, fitness, and health across the lifespan. For that purpose, the ASM is underpinned by ecological dynamics and advocates three major avenues to enrich movement experiences, namely, to make use of the concentric approach to movement skills acquisition. Secondly, to exploit the transferability of movements through the use of the concepts of Multisports and Donorsports. Thirdly, to create challenging learning environments that foster adaptability and encourage greater diversification of movement capabilities from a constraints-led perspective.
