The invention provides augmented reality technology-based handheld reading equipment and a reading method thereof. The equipment comprises a video collecting unit, an intelligent computing terminal, a voice output unit and a liquid crystal display. The video collecting unit is used for shooting real scenes through a first camera. The intelligent computing terminal is used for identifying two-dimensional codes in the real scenes to acquire code value information and space position information, then placing preset virtual scenes according to the space position information, and generating reading frames combined from the real scenes and the virtual scenes. The voice output unit is used for outputting voice information corresponding to the virtual scenes through a loudspeaker. The circular liquid crystal display is used for displaying the reading frames. Compared with the prior art, the augmented reality technology-based handheld reading equipment can generate a virtual environment which is highly matched with the real scene and which has vivid visual sense, hearing sense, touching sense, strength feel, dynamic and the like, and realize a direct interaction between a user and a virtual three-dimensional environment. Thus, for children, more sensory stimulation is available, learning efficiency is improved, and effect of teaching with pleasure is achieved.
