Efficacy of atorvastatin in preventing symptomatic cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage

2010
Aim To observe the efficacy of atorvastatin in prevention of symptomatic cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage. Methods 47 cases of spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage were randomly divided into study group (24 cases)treated with 20mg/d of atorvastatin on the basis of conventional treatment and control group (23 cases) treated with conventional treatment. Results The mean flow velocity of middle cerebral artery in study group at the 7th and 14th day were significantly slower than the control group, showing statistical significance (P0.05); the incidence of symptomatic cerebral vasospasm and cerebral vascular spasm in study group were significantly lower than the control group (P0.05),but the incidence of delayed cerebral infarction was not significantly different compared with the control group(P0.05).Conclusions Application of atorvastatin can reduce the occurrence of symptomatic cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage.
