Introduction: Currently, it is well accepted the role of infectious agents as important risk factors for certain malignancies. In the 1980s, the first evidence of human papillomavirus as risk factor for oral SCC was published. Since then, hundreds of papers has been published on this subject. Aim: The aim of this article was, through a review of the literature; analize the scientific evidence of HPV as a risk factor for oral and oropharyngeal carcinoma. method: HPV is the main infectious agent involved in the pathogenesis of oral and oropharyngeal SCC, being subtype 16 the most often found. From this review of the literature, based mainly on systematic reviews and meta-analysis. Conclusion: HPV is an independent risk factor for oral and oropharyngeal carcinomas, especially the tonsils.
