A deviant diagnosis?: Doctors facedwith a patient’s diagnostic work

espanolA partir de un caso de diagnostico ‘profano’ que pone en duda un tratamiento y lleva al paciente a decidir interrumpirlo, analizamos aqui sus andanzas, las condiciones de elaboracion de su diagnostico, los motivos de su decision, y las reacciones de los medicos. Este caso plantea preguntas sobre la relacion del paciente con respecto a la autoridad medica, y aborda cuestiones fundamentales como la farmacovigilancia, la desmedicalizacion, y la pacient agency. EnglishBased on a case of a “lay” diagnosis that questions a treatment and leads the patient to decide to cease taking it, this paper examines the patient’s protracted journey, the conditions in which he made the diagnosis, the reasons for his decision and the doctors’ reactions to this. This case study allows us to investigate the patient’s relationship with medical authority and to reflect on fundamental issues such as pharmacovigilance, demedicalisation and patient agency.
