Structure-property correlation in magnesium nanocomposites synthesized by disintegrated melt deposition technique

2018
Abstract Magnesium (Mg) is the lightest of structural metals. The ductility of Mg is low, and can be enhanced by making nanocomposites. Synthesis of Mg-nanocomposites is a major challenge as uniform distribution of nanoparticles is essential. An efficient and proven technique to make Mg-nanocomposites is the disintegrated melt deposition (DMD) technique. This paper presents an overview on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-nanocomposites made by DMD method. Structure-property correlation revealed that the significant improvement in the mechanical properties obtained in the nanocomposites was due to the uniform distribution of nanoreinforcement, dispersion strengthening-like effect and change in Mg-crystal orientation.
