A multipath approach for reliable high quality video transport in indoor 60 GHz radio networks

2010
The emerging high definition in-home multimedia applications require higher capacity from future wireless networks in the indoor environments. In this paper, we consider a novel mesh-like architecture for indoor wireless networks using 60 GHz radio for supporting multimedia applications with sufficient data rate and stringent quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees. We concentrate on studying the application of multipath routing to enhance reliability of transporting high quality video since 60 GHz transmission is highly dependent on line-of-sight (LOS). Based on our previous study on the stability of 60 GHz radios, we propose a cross-layer approach taking into account layered coding technique for video stream transportation. We present our model along with an analysis to assess multipath routing in this scenario. Further, we give an in-depth discussion on two traffic allocation schemes to harness multipath capability.
