Toxicological study of NTO

The acute oral LD/sub 50/ values for NTO for mice and rats are greater than 5 g/kg. According to classical guidelines, the test material would be considered only slightly toxic or practically non-toxic in both species. Skin application studies in the rabbit with NTO demonstrated that it was mildly irritating cutaneously. With the scoring scheme, the rabbit eye test was considered negative; however, transient conjunctival and corneal irritation did result from the NTO application in several animals and one developed a chronic anterior uveitis.
