Influence of temperature on string formation of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris).

An investigation was made into the temperature effect on string development in beans. After a description of the anatomy of the string, the possibilities of anatomical and mechanical determinations of the strenght of the string are discussed. In three successieve experiments eleven bean varieties were grown at 17°, 20° and 23° C in controlled glasshouse rooms, after which string strength determinations were made on the pods. On the basis of the results the varieties were divided into three groups:
