PILING METHODS CAN INFLUENCE PERFORMANCE

1972
THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE INFLUENCE OF PILE INSTALLATION TECHNIQUES ON THE SUBSEQUENT BEARING CAPACITY OF PILES, WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO BORING PILES (PERCUSSION BORING AND AUGER BORING TECHNIQUES) FOUNDED ON ROCK OR BORED IN SAND, GRAVEL, SILT AND CLAY. PERCUSSION BORING CAN CAUSE CONSIDERABLE DISTURBANCE AND ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE ADVANTAGES OF AUGERING WHICH, BECAUSE OF THE SPEED OF BORING, IMPARTS TEMPORARY STABILITY TO AN INHERENTLY UNSTABLE SOIL FORMATION. A COMPARATIVE STUDY IS MADE OF PILE PERFORMANCE UNDER TEST LOADING BETWEEN A DRY BORE AND ONE CARRIED OUT UNDER A BENTONITE MUD SUSPENSION IN FISSURED CLAY. /TRRL/
