Effect of process parameters on mechanical and metallurgical properties of friction stir processed AZ31Mg alloy

2018
Abstract In this investigation an effort has been made to study the effect of rotational, welding speed and plunge depth on metallurgical and mechanical properties of AZ31Mg alloy by friction stir processing, parameters were optimized for mechanical properties. Plunge depth was found to have significant effect on tensile strength, impact energy while percent elongation was most affected by rotational speed. Majority of processed specimen failed at advancing side i.e. at the boundary of nugget and heat affected zone. Highest ultimate tensile strength 245 MPa, Impact energy 11J, percent elongation 8.2% was achieved under optimized set of parameters for each property.
