In-situ resource augmentation of Commiphora wightii (Arn.) Bhandari (Guggul) in Gujarat

In the current scenario, whole world community is facing serious pandemic ailments. It has been attracted to human being to think over our Indian traditional healing system i.e. Ayurveda, Unani, Yoga, Siddha, Homeopathy & Naturopathy and other traditional folklore systems. Due to rapid destruction of natural vegetation, over exploitation of natural resources and various anthropogenic activities, an important species Commiphora wighttii (Arn.) Bhandari (Guggul) have been shifted under threatened category as per International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Guggul oleo-gum resin is used traditionally in Indian System of Medicine since immemorial time and also in modern system of medicine. Keeping in view, the National Medicinal Plants Board, under Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India has supported projects for conservation and resource augmentation of Guggul in Gujarat state forest departments. Present paper deals with propagation, year-wise plantations, area covered, survival percentage and grading as per monitoring of the plantation area. Apart from, need of scientific oleo-gum resin tapping from planted area of Guggul is also highlighted.
