Awards presented at the Spring Meeting: Fortieth Presentation: William Bowie Medal to Helmut Erich Landsberg for outstanding contributions to fundamental geophysics and for unselfish cooperation in research

1978
It is with a great deal of honor and humility that I accepted the opportunity to prepare this citation for Professor Emeritus Helmut E. Landsberg. His career of research and service in the field of science spans nearly a half century and has encompassed many important scientific achievements in the fields of geophysics, seismology, meteorology, climatology, air pollution, biometeorology, medical climatology, and urban meteorology. It occurs to me that surely some of these fields of study exist today largely because of the deep and probing questions which were raised and considered by the remarkable gentleman whom we are honoring at this moment. As a scholar of international renown, Helmut's work has influenced the thinking of scientists, engineers, and environmental planners in many parts of the world. He has had a profound influence on the world of science not only through his scholarly research but also in teaching and educational innovation in several universities of the world, in his long and significant service in science administration, and in his tireless service and leadership in an increasing number of professional societies.
