Removal of translocated IUD through laparoscopy

1979
5 instances are reported of IUDs translocated in the peritoneal cavity which were successfully extracted with the aid of laparoscopy. The procedure was performed through a 1-hole incision using Ketalar (Parke-Davis) anesthesia. Under direct visualization through the laparoscope the IUD could be easily removed. The operation was quick easy and did not require hospitalization. Uterine perforation and translocation of a closed type device can cause intestinal obstruction whereas this is not the case with the open type; nevertheless some recommended removal of the IUD since a chronic intraperitoneal foreign body can induce the formation of adhesions. With the facility of laparoscopy now available the authors approve of removing an iatrogenic foreign body (open or closed type device) rather than waiting for clinical symptoms to develop.
